Where does the tongue drum come from?
The ZenaDrum is a tongue drum, a percussion instrument from the idiophone family. The sound of idiophones like the ZenaDrum is produced solely by the material of the instrument, without the need for a string or an external resonator.
The tongue drum has many names: Steel Tongue Drum, Tongue Drum, Tank Drum or even Hank Drum.
Its special and unique shape is often compared to a flying saucer. The number of "tongues" defines how many notes the instrument has. The sweet sound of the tongue drum is produced when it is struck with sticks or pads.
This percussion instrument is appreciated for its extremely soothing and melodic sound, but especially for its easy playability.
Due to its intuitiveness, ZenaDrum does not require any special musical knowledge, so it is very appreciated by beginners and children.
In just a few minutes it is possible to play beautiful, relaxing melodies.
Hang drum, the forerunner of the tongue drum
The precursor of the tongue drum is the hang drum, which is also called the handpan. Although its name is very similar to the tongue drum and it releases beautiful music, this instrument differs in a few ways.
The Hang Drum is played only with the hands and is much larger than our Tongue Drum, making it impractical to carry around.
Also, it does not have a tongue, but a hammered surface that allows it to produce sounds with the handpan.
Finally, it has two major drawbacks: its price and maintenance. Handpan that are not made of steel can easily rust and become out of tune. As for the price, it is much less attractive, as you can expect to pay over 1000€ for a good quality Handpan, that is 10 times more expensive than a ZenaDrum.
